Celebrities are definitely the number one role models out there, but what happens when you have little children following your every move? Zac Efron is a teenage superstar who sings and acts but is most famous for his role in High School Musical. Through High School Musical he has attracted many fans to follow him starting with children as old as 5 going up to 30 yr old girls. Recently, he was a star in the movie 17 Again where he played a father who went back in time and tries to fix his marriage. He states in an interview with ShowBiz that he has to watch out what movie roles he accepts because children do look up to him. I don’t believe he has done that. (image from here)
My little sister is 6 and if you walk into her room there are pictures of Zac Efron everywhere. She is like his number one fan so of course when this movie came out she was dying to se
e it. The day it came out she begged and begged me to take her, so I did. She wore her High School Musical shirt and was so excited to see Zac in the movie. As the movie started, I figured that it was just another kid’s movie but boy was I wrong. It started off looking and sounding like High School Musical but as it continued it turned into such an inappropriate movie for my sister. There were scenes where Zac would make out with different girls and also scenes where they talked about condom use and many other sexual related topics. I felt that movie was advertised to many of the young children and it was definitely not appropriate for them. The movie theatre was actually full of kids and walking out many parents were a little disturbed. (image from here)
The Spokesman Review also critics the movie and explains how it did use sex terms that does not relate to children but relates to teens. As a celebrity, Zac Efron knows that his following is mainly young girls and I believe that he should have thought about his role in the movie and the effect it would have on the children watching it.
